Episode Three

Chapter One

Cat

Heart in my throat, I slowly turn around to face my newest threat. In my mind, I picture every possible horror, but what I find matches none of those things.

It’s Eric.

One of the alphas. The quiet one. The head of the necromancers. I’ve never been this close to him before. From far away, he had a tall, brooding feel to him. From up close, there’s something unexpectedly handsome about him. From his hazel eyes, to the sharp lines of his face, this Eric seems entirely out of place here in the shadows of this broken shack in a cursed forest.

“What are you doing here?” Bursts from my lips.

He jerks back from me and drops his hand from my shoulder. “What are you doing here?”

“I—“ What am I supposed to tell him? That I was searching for my missing brother? That I was upset after my night with Zach and the fight between him and Carter?

I don’t know what to say, so I do the only thing I can. I just stare at him.

A tortured expression twists his face. “Every fucking student knows to stay out of these woods. Every student knows that no one comes back! Why in the hell would you go here?”

The hairs on my arms stand on end, and I wrap them around myself. “I don’t know.”

And even to my own ears, I sound lost and confused.

He closes his eyes. “These woods are for the most powerful necromancers. They’re a place for us to raise our dead and to try to ignore the ghosts that torture us. Anyone else who walks these woods will die. It’s the way it is. It’s the way it has to be.”

Suddenly, I’m feeling uneasy. I assumed that when he pulled me away from those undead creatures, he was saving me, but it kind of sounds like he still thinks I’m going to die.

Is he planning on killing me? Panic uncurls inside of me. I don’t want to die again. Not here. Not now.

“It doesn’t have to end like that,” I say, my words almost a question.

He shakes his head, then holds his head between his hands as if fighting something unseen.

“Eric?”

I don’t think he hears me. His expression is so tortured. He jerks one way and then another. His hands slide to cover his ears, and he visibly shakes.

Suddenly, I’m brought back to a memory from a time long ago, to the first time I had that feeling. The one that was like a creature was rolling up my spine, causing every hair on my body to stand on end. It was a feeling that had started the moment the Cross family had come to see us at the orphanage. The lady who trotted us out to see Mr. and Mrs. Cross spoke excitedly of finding a forever home and being loved, but when I looked at the two people with sweet voices and perfect clothes, I’d felt scared.

When they signed the final papers and immediately moved us away from our state, the feeling had grown.
